Press Release

Washington, D.C—Today, Congresswoman Xochitl Torres Small (NM-02) voted to provide critical support for the United States Postal Service (USPS) to ensure New Mexicans across central and southern parts of the state can continue to receive the goods, services, and medications they rely on an everyday basis.

“The past few months, constituents have reached out about the consequences of scaling back mail delivery—citing everything from utility bills arriving 10 days late to a veteran household finding themselves running low on heart medication. New Mexicans rely on the post office to remain connected year-round. I’m glad that Republicans and Democrats came together today to support a service that touches all our communities. Now I encourage my colleagues and the Trump Administration to come together in the same spirit to negotiate the next COVID-19 package and provide the much-needed relief to Americans across the country,” said Torres Small.

The bipartisan Delivering for America Act:

  • Prohibits the Postal Service from implementing or approving any changes to the operations or service levels in effect on January 1, 2020, that would impede prompt, reliable, and efficient service.  The prohibition remains in effect during the duration of the coronavirus public health emergency or January 2021, whichever is later.
  • Requires the Postal Service to treat all election mail as first-class mail.
  • Provides $25 billion in critically needed emergency appropriations for the Postal Service, the level of funding recommended by the USPS Board of Governors, which is composed of 100 percent Trump Administration appointees.
