Washington, D.C. – U.S. Representative Xochitl Torres Small (NM-02) applauds the implementation of the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA), which takes effect today.  It will replace the North American Free Trade Agreement, marking a new era of trade as New Mexico and the United States work to recover and rebuild from COVID-19.

“As we band together to rebuild in the midst of unprecedented economic hardship, USMCA will keep and create jobs, grow our trade economy, and secure real, enforceable labor provisions. In southern New Mexico, the USMCA is crucial for New Mexico’s export industry, supporting chile and pecan growers, oil and gas workers, and local businesses. This historic trade deal shows what’s possible when we put partisan politics aside and work together,” said Torres Small.

Rep. Torres Small was an early supporter of the USMCA, penning an op-ed in the Albuquerque Journal calling on Congress to work with President Trump to pass the new trade deal. Following her urgent calls, Torres Small presided as Speaker Pro Tempore during the final debate outlining the details of the trade deal, which was signed into law on January 29, 2020.
