Torres Small Statement Following George Floyd Memorial Service

Las Cruces, NM–Today, Congresswoman Xochitl Torres Small (NM-02) issued the following statement:

Today, we mourn the death and celebrate the life of George Floyd, a loving father and respected member of his community. His life was taken at the hands of people who pledged to serve and protect. Now, his son and daughter will grow up without their father.

In the wake of his murder, and countless acts of police brutality against black Americans, citizens across our country are exercising one of our most powerful tools for change—free speech through peaceful protest. We must reckon with our nation’s deepest sins. We must continue on the path toward justice not just for George Floyd but for Breonna Taylor, Ahmaud Arbery, and the many others who have suffered the deepest injustices in our society. And, we must continue to exercise our rights to demand the best of our institutions, each other, and ourselves.
