Press Release

Washington, D.C. Congresswoman Torres Small (NM-02) issued the following statement after the House passed the Justice in Policing Act last night with a bipartisan vote of 236-181. The legislation aims to reform public safety measures and foster working relationships between law enforcement agencies and the communities they serve.

“Last night, the House acted decisively by passing the Justice in Policing Act. This legislation raises the bar for accountability as our law enforcement officers carry out their duty to protect and serve. Congress took an important step towards addressing systemic racism by establishing the accountability measures communities across the country need. While we celebrate the passage of this bill, I want to be clear, I do not support defunding the police and recognize more work lies ahead. The fight for real reform does not end with this vote, and that includes making sure rural law enforcement has a seat at the table.”
