Washington, D.C. –Today, Representative Xochitl Torres Small (NM-02) and Rep. Steven Horsford (NV-04) introduced the Back on Your Feet Act, which would extend federal unemployment assistance and provide a benefit to those reentering the workforce during the COVID-19 pandemic. Specifically, the legislation would provide a one-time federal payment, or “Back on Your Feet Pay” of $3,600 for workers who are able to return to work safely, to smooth their transition back to work and provide for basic needs until they get their first paychecks.

Las Cruces, NM—After weeks of fighting for changes to the Paycheck Protection Program (PPP) that would benefit New Mexico small businesses and then voting for the legislation on the floor, the Paycheck Protection Program Flexibility Act was finally signed into law this afternoon. The final legislation includes PPP loan flexibility measures that Rep. Torres Small has been a leading advocate on, including provisions that allow loans to be used more broadly on expenses outside of payroll while still being forgiven and extending the deadline to rehire employees.

Las Cruces, NM–Yesterday, Congresswoman Xochitl Torres Small (NM-02) led a bipartisan letter calling on Secretary of the Interior David Bernhardt to issue a rule that would give oil and gas operators the flexibility to temporarily shut in their wells during the COVID-19 public health emergency. The office of New Mexico’s State Land Commission issued a similar rule to be applied to state land that received support from both environmental groups and the energy industry.
